8-Day Xishuangbanna, Jingmai Mountain & Pu'er Discovery: Ancient Tea Forests, Ethnic Villages and the Tea Horse Trail

Depart Jinghong and drive into the mountains towards Nannuo Ancient Tea Mountain, one of the six famous tea mountains of Xishuangbanna and a centuries-old source of Pu'er tea. A 2–3 hour hike takes you through terraced tea gardens, past traditional Hani (Akha) villages, and up to viewpoints over rolling tea-covered hills. After a local lunch, continue east towards Jingmai Mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2023 and home to the world's best-preserved ancient tea forest ecosystem, cultivated by the Bulang and Dai peoples for over 1,800 years. Arrive at your guesthouse in the late afternoon, in time to catch the first sunset over the ridges.

Rise early to watch the sunrise and cloud sea from a viewpoint on Jingmai Mountain—one of the most magical experiences in Yunnan. After breakfast, visit the Dapingzhang Ancient Tea Forest, the largest and best-preserved section of Jingmai's millennia-old tea ecosystem, where tea plants grow in harmony with camphor and ficus trees. In the afternoon, explore Wengji Bulang Ancient Village, a living settlement of over a thousand years preserving stilted wooden houses, stone-paved lanes and a centuries-old Buddhist temple. Walk through the village, meet local families, and learn how the Bulang—considered the earliest tea cultivators—revere the tea tree as both livelihood and spiritual heritage.

The morning is devoted to a 3.5–4 hour hike on Aileng Mountain, a quieter, less-visited corner of the Jingmai range, where wild tea trees grow scattered among the forest, their gnarled trunks draped in lichen and moss. After descending, visit the Bee God Tree, a massive sacred tree revered by the Bulang people as the dwelling place of the bee spirit—guardian of the tea mountains. Continue to Nuogan Dai Village, a hillside Dai settlement with elegant wooden houses and a Buddhist temple. End the day at Manghong, a viewpoint beloved for its west-facing panorama, where you can watch the sun set behind the layered ridges of Jingmai.

Bid farewell to Jingmai Mountain and drive north towards Pu'er. The first stop is Laodabao Lahu Village, a traditional Lahu settlement where music and community life are inseparable—villagers of all ages sing and play instruments such as the lusheng (reed-pipe), often turning gatherings into impromptu performances. Continue to Nake Li Ancient Post Station, a well-preserved relay station along the historic Tea Horse Road, with cobbled lanes, old stone bridges and weathered inn buildings evoking the era of mule caravans carrying tea to Tibet. Afterwards, check into your hotel in Pu'er, the eponymous home of Pu'er tea.

Spend the morning at Sun River National Park, a vast protected area of tropical and subtropical forest straddling the Tropic of Cancer. An electric shuttle takes you deep into the park, where boardwalks lead through natural habitats and wildlife areas, with opportunities to observe animals such as slow lorises, black bears and red pandas. Any animal interaction fees are at the guest's own expense. After lunch, visit the Pu'er Tea Expo Garden, where an electric cart takes you through tea terraces and workshops. The highlight is a hands-on workshop: under a tea master's guidance, steam, shape and press your own tea cake to take home, ending with a tasting of raw and ripe Pu'er.

Drive south from Pu'er back towards Jinghong. En route, stop at Wild Elephant Valley, a sanctuary for Asia's last remaining wild elephants in China. A single-direction cable car offers a bird's-eye view of the rainforest canopy, after which offer a chance to look for wild elephants; sightings cannot be guaranteed in their natural habitat—most visible near the river in the morning and late afternoon. Continue to Manzhang Village, a traditional Dai settlement where two ancient crafts are still practised: paper-making from paper mulberry bark and palm-leaf scripture carving. Try both under the guidance of village artisans, then arrive in Jinghong in the late afternoon.
